Palaceses of India
Purani Haveli is a palace located in Hyderabad, India. It was the
official residence of the Nizam. It was also known as Haveli Khadeem,
which means old mansion, was constructed for Sikander Jah, Asaf Jah III
(1803–1829) by his father Ali Khan Bahadur, Asaf Jah II.
The Haveli is “U” in shape, with two oblong wings running parallel to
each other and the residential palace located perpendicularly in the
middle. The main building resembles 18th-century European palaces. A
unique feature of this palace is the world’s longest wardrobe, built in
two levels with a hand-cranked wooden lift(elevator) in place. This
occupies the entire length of one wing of the palace.

The palace also houses the Nizam’s museum, which is dedicated to the
last Nizam of Hyderabad state. Currently the palace is being used as a
school and as an Industrial Training Institute .
Falaknuma Palace is one of the finest palaces in Hyderabad, Andhra
Pradesh, India. It belonged to Paigah Hyderabad State, and it was later
owned by the Nizams. It is on a 32-acre, 19400 square meter area in
Falaknuma, 5 km from Charminar. It was built by Nawab Vikar-ul-Umra, the
then-prime minister of Hyderabad and the uncle and brother-in-law of
H.H. The Nizam VI, Nawab Mir Mahboob Ali Khan Bahadur. Falak-numa means
“Like the Sky” or “Mirror of the Sky” in Urdu.
An English architect designed this palace. The foundation for the
construction was laid by H.E. Sir Vicar Ul Umra Bahadur on March 3,
1884. He was the great grandson of Khuddus, a famous scientist who was a
best friend of Sir Charles Darwin. It took nine years to complete the
construction and furnish the palace. Sir Vicar moved into the Gol Bangla
and Zanana Mahel of the Falaknuma Palace in December 1889 and closely
monitored the finishing work at the Mardana portion. It is made
completely with Italian marble and covers an area of 93,971 square
meters.
The palace was built in the shape of a scorpion with two stings spread
out as wings in the north. The middle part is occupied by the main
building and the kitchen, Gol Bangla, Zenana Mehal, and harem quarters
stretch to the south. The Nawab was an avid traveler, and his influences
show in the architecture.
The Falaknuma palace is a rare blend of Italian and Tudor architecture.
Its stained glass windows throw a spectrum of colour into the rooms.

Jahaz Mahal (in Urdu Language ‘Jahaz’ means “Ship” and ‘Mahal’ means
“Palace”, the “Ship Palace”), is located next to Hauz-i-Shamsi in
Mehrauli, Delhi on its northeastern corner. It was so named, since its
reflection (illusion) in the surrounding reservoir looked like a ship
floating on a lake. It is inferred to have been built during the Lodi
dynasty period (1452–1526) as a pleasure resort, Sarai or an inn.
One reason for building the Jahaz Mahal retreat was to provide
transit accommodation as a Sarai or (inn) to the large number of
pilgrims from Afghanistan, Arabia, Iran, Iraq, Morocco and Turkey who
came to Delhi to visit the many Muslim shrines. Another version is that
it was built as a retreat for the emperors, Akbar Shah II and Bahadur
Shah II and their families, during the summer months, away from the heat
and dust of Delhi. Its construction is dated between 1451 AD and 1526
AD, before Babar’s invasion and the beginning of Mughal rule in Delhi.

Hawa Mahal
translation: “Palace of Winds” or “Palace of the Breeze”), is a
palace in Jaipur, India. It was built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap
Singh, and designed by Lal Chand Ustad in the form of the crown of
Krishna, the Hindu god. Its unique five-storey exterior is also akin to
the honeycomb of the beehive with its 953 small windows called jharokhas
that are decorated with intricate latticework. The original intention
of the lattice was to allow royal ladies to observe everyday life in the
street below without being seen, since they had to observe strict
“purdah” (face cover).
Built of red and pink sandstone, the palace is situated on the main
thoroughfare in the heart of Jaipur’s business centre. It forms part of
the City Palace, and extends to the Zenana or women’s chambers, the
chambers of the harem. It is particularly striking when viewed early in
the morning, lit with the golden light of sunrise.
